Re-coil

Serpent, you may have the last laugh.
While the maggots are dense
with their brainy little waltz,
while the dark eggs' hatchlings
go blind before birth,
while the eels turn magenta
from touching raw corals,
you may crackle in purple-venom-laden glee.

Serpent,
who knows what your thoughts are?
Dreams wet, shiny and dripping,
rhyming with scalesong
as you walk.
Memories rising in slithery smoke
while grass-blades shrug in wet revolt.

Serpent,
be
my
guest.
